AUCKLAND (Sachin Sharma): The government of India has allowed the release of Sikh prisoner Bhai Lal Singh Akalgarh, 61.
He is lodged in jail under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act for past 28 years.
Various Sikh organisations have been raising the demand of releasing the Sikh prisoners who are languishing in jails despite completing their jail terms.
According to Amritsar Times, Nabha Jail superintendent has received communication from Under Secretary (Union Home Ministry), MK Chahar, that director general of Police, Gujarat and their inspector general of police (jails) has ordered for release of Akalgarh from jail on March 3. 2020.
Resident of Akalgarh village near Phagwara in Kapurthala district, in 1997 he was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection of case related to recovery of weapons at Dadar Railway police station in Mumbai in 1992.
Akalgarh's counsel, Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, talking to Amritsar Times said, central government has approved the release of Akalgarh to mark 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, and order was passed in this regard in March this year, but Punjab government hasn't implemented the decision yet.
