AUCKLAND (NZ Punjabi News Service): Auckland District Court has fined a developer $80,750 for illegally building unsafe apartments.

Developer John Liong Kiat Wong illegally converted a warehouse in the suburb of Eden Terrace into a building with offices, car parking and nine residential apartments.

The illegal work came to light in 2018 after a large concrete block fell from the top level of the converted building and onto a neighbour’s roof.

Developer has been fined on four separate charge including “carrying out illegal building work; continuing work in breach of a stop-work requirement; failing to obtain a compliance schedule relating to fire safety systems; and converting a building into accommodation without resource consent”.

Auckland Council said that people were living in the apartments, and basic safety features such as smoke detectors and fire sprinklers didn’t have a warrant of fitness, the council said.
