A Papatoetoe local board member says he was left stunned after an Auckland Airport parking machine attempted to charge him more than NZ$4,000 for what was meant to be a short 15-minute visit to the international terminal car park.

Kushma Nair, said the incident happened on Monday when he briefly stopped at the airport before heading to the payment machine to exit the short-term parking area.

However, instead of displaying the normal fee for a short stay, the machine repeatedly showed a charge of $4059.

Nair said he initially believed there was a serious technical problem with the machine because the amount seemed impossible for such a brief visit. He tried the payment process again, but the same figure appeared a second time, leaving him shocked and confused.

Speaking about the incident, Nair said he immediately contacted customer support through the help button at the payment station. After staff checked the system, they reportedly discovered the issue was linked to a malfunction connected to one of his previous airport parking visits.

According to Nair, the earlier parking session had apparently remained open in the system, causing the machine to combine old charges with his latest visit and generate the massive amount.

Once the error was identified, airport staff corrected the issue and he was eventually charged just $12.50 for the short stay.

While the matter was resolved, Nair said the experience raised concerns about how many other drivers could potentially face similar problems without realising what had happened.

The incident has since triggered discussion online, with many Aucklanders expressing surprise that an automated parking system could display such a high amount due to a technical fault.

Some also questioned whether stronger safeguards and clearer customer notifications are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
