A 35-year-old Auckland man has been arrested after police uncovered what they allege was a large-scale shoplifting operation that saw hundreds of chocolate bars and other goods stolen from supermarkets across the city.
According to police, the man is accused of taking more than $9,000 worth of products from stores in West Auckland alone. Investigators believe chocolate was a common target, with the suspect allegedly carrying out thefts at several supermarkets over an extended period.
The man is now facing 21 charges, including 19 counts related to shoplifting.
Police say one of the most significant incidents involved a supermarket in Te Atatū, where the man is accused of stealing goods valued at more than $3,000 in a single case.
Auckland City West Area Prevention Manager Inspector Wayne Kitcher said the investigation suggests the suspect repeatedly targeted supermarkets throughout Auckland and appeared to focus heavily on chocolate products.
“It appears this person allegedly targeted chocolate from various supermarkets across the city,” Kitcher said.
He praised the work of police staff involved in the investigation, saying the arrest was made possible through intelligence-led policing and the efforts of one of the district’s intelligence officers.
“This is an example of some exceptional police work, particularly by one of our intelligence officers, which led to this arrest,” he said.
The accused appeared in the Auckland District Court over the weekend and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear before the court again in August.
Retail crime continues to be a growing concern for businesses across New Zealand, with supermarkets and retailers increasingly investing in security measures to combat repeat offending. Police say they remain committed to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for theft and organised retail crime.
