Forecasters say overnight temperatures in parts of Auckland could drop to around 7C during the coming days, bringing noticeably colder mornings and evenings for residents across the city. The colder conditions are expected to continue through much of the week.
Despite the cold starts, daytime temperatures are still forecast to remain relatively mild, sitting around 17C to 18C under mostly clear and settled skies.
Weather experts say the sharp drop in temperature is being caused by a high-pressure system sitting over the country. The clear skies and calm winds are allowing heat to escape quickly overnight, creating colder-than-usual mornings.
The cooler weather is not limited to Auckland. Several regions across New Zealand are expected to experience chilly conditions, with frost possible in some inland North Island areas. Parts of the South Island are also forecast to see temperatures fall close to freezing, especially in higher and rural areas.
Meteorologists say the cold spell marks a stronger sign that winter conditions are beginning to settle in across the country after a relatively mild autumn.
While no major storms or severe weather warnings have been issued, authorities are advising people to take extra care during the colder mornings, especially drivers travelling early when roads may be damp or slippery in some places.
Health experts are also encouraging residents to stay warm and look out for elderly family members and young children, who are more vulnerable during sudden temperature drops.
The colder pattern is expected to remain in place for several days before temperatures gradually begin easing later in the week.
